Brief background of our beautiful town and surrounding area

Located in the heart of the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts on the east side of the beautiful Connecticut River, South Hadley is a town of rolling hills, beautiful vistas, friendly residential neighborhoods, and thriving businesses.

Although settlement began in 1725, it was not incorporated as a town with its own representative in General Government until 1755. Today, it’s approximately 20,000 citizens have a representative Town Meeting.

South Hadley is the home of Mount Holyoke College, the oldest continuing institution of higher education for women in the country, many beautiful historic buildings and homes, the Firehouse Museum, Hadley Falls Canal Park, near the site of the first navigable canal in the United States, the Joseph Allen Skinner State Park, and other recreational areas. It is about a half hour drive from Springfield, only a few minutes drive from Northampton and Amherst, Massachsuetts, and within an easy drive of Boston, Hartford, Albany and New York City.
